Introduction:
Healthcare professionals, including myself, often are asks about the safe amount of coffee that can be consumed by patients visiting our cardiology clinics. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide and in recent times, there have been several interesting studies looking into relationship between coffee consumption and heart health.
Clinical trials:
Coffee (decaffeinated, ground and instant) in an amount of 2 to 3 cups a day, reduces risk of heart disease and risk of dying, according to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology in September 2022. It was a large research trial, which included over 440 000 individuals with a median age of 58 years. Follow up lasted 12 years and 55.3% study participants were female. Interestingly, only ground and instant coffee but not decaffeinated preparation were associated with reduction of arrythmias (abnormal heart beat). https://academic.oup.com/eurjpc/article/29/17/2240/6704995?login=false
In addition to this, according to a review article published in 2021 in the European Heart Journal, moderate (4 cups a day) coffee intake is associated with a reduced risk of heart failure. In addition to this both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption provides protection from Type 2 Diabetes. https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/42/44/4520/6409460?login=false
Finally, a study published in the Journal of American Heart Association in 2019 demonstrated that reduced risk of Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heart beat) in male patients, who consumed between 1 and 3 cups of coffee a day. https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.118.011346
Conclusions:
The key to enjoying coffee while maintaining heart health lies in moderation. Sensible coffee consumption is unlikely to pose significant risks and may even have potential benefits for heart health. Additionally, focusing on a well-rounded heart-healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and avoiding smoking, is paramount for maintaining optimal cardiovascular health.
