An Echocardiogram (Echo) is a non-invasive ultrasound of the heart, which requires no special preparation. It is similar in principle to an abdominal ultrasound or `baby scans` during pregnancy. It uses sound waves to produce real-time images of the heart’s structure, chambers, valves, and blood flow. During an echocardiogram, a probe is placed on the chest and directed toward the heart. These images, allow healthcare providers to visualize the heart in motion and assess its size, shape, and function

Echocardiograms are used to diagnose and monitor various heart conditions, including, problems with heart valves, which often cause heart murmurs, heart failure , cardiomyopathies, pericardial diseases or blood clots within the heart chambers.

Echocardiograms are also used to assess the effect of high blood pressure on the heart or any residual effects of a heart attack.

Echocardiograms are utilised to investigate many of potentially heart related symptoms, such as breathlessness, chest pain, ankle swelling or blackouts.

In our clinics an echocardiogram can be performed at the same time as a clinical consultation and takes between 30 to 40 minutes, with no second visit required.
